Sister Mary Corita Kent spent the 1960s turning the silkscreen — a medium built for advertising — into a tool for conscience. Working out of the print workshop she ran at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, she folded scripture, protest slogans, and the bright vernacular of supermarket packaging into a body of work that stood alongside Warhol's pop but pointed toward peace, civil rights, and social justice rather than celebrity and consumption. "Heart of the arrow," printed in 1969, belongs to her series "A Set of Heroes and Sheroes," made at the height of her most urgent, politically engaged period — the years before she left the order and the classroom to devote herself to art full-time.
Hand-signed and inscribed by Kent herself, this is a rare, tangible piece of one of American pop art's most distinctive and unrecognized voices.
